How to Know When It’s Time to Backwash Your Filter
Your pool filter works hard behind the scenes, keeping your water clean and clear by trapping dirt, oils, and debris. But just like any filter, it needs a clean-out now and then — that’s where backwashing comes in.
So, how do you know when it's time to do it?
🕵️♂️ 1. Your Pressure Gauge is Climbing
The most reliable way to tell is by checking the filter pressure gauge.
If the pressure is 8–10 PSI higher than normal, it’s a sign your filter is clogged and water can’t flow properly. Backwashing relieves the pressure by flushing out the trapped gunk.
Pro tip: Keep a note of your filter’s normal PSI after a fresh backwash so you have a reference point.
💦 2. The Water Looks Cloudy or Dirty
Even with correct chemical levels, if the water starts looking cloudy or dull, your filter might not be doing its job properly. A quick backwash can often restore filtration performance.
🐌 3. Reduced Water Flow at Return Jets
Noticing weaker water flow or less movement in your pool? That might mean your filter is too full and restricting circulation. Backwashing clears the path.
🗓 4. It’s Been a Few Weeks
Even if everything looks fine, it’s good practice to backwash your filter every 2–4 weeks, especially during the swimming season when the system is working harder.
For pools in leafy or dusty areas, you may need to backwash more often.
🛑 When NOT to Backwash
Don’t overdo it. Too much backwashing can waste water and reduce filter effectiveness.
Don’t skip rinsing (if your system has that setting) — it helps settle the filter media and prevents dust from blowing back into the pool.
✅ Regular Backwashing = A Healthier Pool
Think of it as a spa day for your filter — a quick refresh that helps it keep doing its job efficiently.
